REPERTOIRE & RESIDENCY

RESIDENCY DESCRIPTION

Expect to be taken places you have never been before. Expect to soar with the beat of ancient rhythms. Expect to gain a new understanding of community and a new respect for ritual. Expect to never look at dance the same way again. Expect to be transformed. Choose from a variety of exciting dance activities to design the residency that best suits your needs. Residencies generally range from 1 day to 5 or more days and are infused with the rich cultural heritage of traditional African customs and rituals. Up to three activities may be scheduled per day, with the exception of a Concert day (please note - only one morning master class or movement session activity may be scheduled on the same day as a Concert).

DANCE ACTIVITES

The Lecture Demonstration, one of AADE's most popular offerings, is a 45-minute visual extravaganza of dance, music, and song and provides an introduction to the dance, music, and cultural history of the nations of Africa. The LEC/DEM is a unique educational experience, engaging audiences in a lively celebration of life as practiced in the diverse cultures of modern Africa. Examples of traditional African dance and music styles are interspersed with commentaries on history and folklore. The performers wear authentic African-styled garments, and educational materials are available which describe the clothing, vocabulary, and dances. Audience participation is an integral part of this activity. It is ideally suited for school assemblies, seminars, workshops, outdoor festivals, and large group gatherings.

The Movement Dance Session provides an introduction to traditional African movement and is excellent for people who like to dance (and for those who don't yet know they like to dance), but have little or no dance training. Suitable for all ages. (30 to 50 participants)

The Master Dance Class is designed for teen and/or adult dancers who are technically proficient dancers and want to learn more advanced movement. (Up to 30 participants)

A Specialized Workshop based on traditional African and African American dance and music can be designed to suit any type of audience or any age group. Workshops offer a more detailed focus on a particular concept, such as rites of passage, team building, community building, teacher workshops, elder movement, etc. Workshops can include dance and music demonstrations, movement dance sessions, lectures, and slides/film presentations and can be held in community, corporate, and school settings.

The Concert Program, the culminating event in most residencies, is a breathtaking blend of artistry, athleticism, dynamism, and explosive energy. Featuring a traditional African, contemporary African American, and modern dance repertoire, the concert program presents dances choreographed by AADE Founder and Artist Director, CHUCK DAVIS, and may include works by such noted master choreographers as David Dorfman, Ron Brown, Dr. Kariamu Welsh Asante, Donald McKayle, Assane Konte, and Sandra Burton.

The School Concert is a blend of lecture/demonstration and African dance performance. Ideal for a school setting, the school concert can accommodate a large number of students.
